My photographs explore the meaning of home. I am most curious about how we define home as both the people with whom we are closest and as a place that we have intimate knowledge of. My most recent work is a study of these ideas.
Through marriage I've gained relatives whose rituals and histories are vastly different from my own. The sudden familiarity that I now have with these people astounds me. I make portraits of my new family to better understand the connections that we share. Additionally, the portraits of my husband Aaron are a study in understanding how my own concepts of home are shifting. I want to know what happens when life changes and a new residence or family life takes over. How do these changes alter one's definitions of home?
From the moment that we are born we build intimacy through experiences, relationships, and memories. This foundation is made up of people and places that we broadly define as being home. It is this familiar knowledge that I wish to convey through these photographs.
